Archive for Business Grants

…. And I decided to look for some specific answers.health_care_access_manual_logo

Got some.

Before I go into all the details – I want to go for the juicy part.

If you want to start! a business in healthcare or healthcare education and prevention in your community, there are funds for you RIGHT NOW to start your business. Remember: what the Obama administration is looking to accomplish is to broaden the scope and reach of the local health care centers. That means more community clinics, rehab centers, and outreach programs of all kinds. That means you.

If you or someone you know (and love and want to prosper) owns/operates/shares ownership of any kind of health center seeking to grow their clinic, there are grants for ….

Uncle Sam album cover

I just read an article that reaffirmed the belief that Uncle Sam just categorically does not fund businesses. They reiterated the accepted view that grants are for the arts and for education, and possibly for research, if you are lucky.

You know, in a way they are right. IF..

If you do not have a “noggin” worth beans and do not ever resort to wearing your thinking cap.

Sorry. I had to say it.

Allow me to rant: what is wrong with your eye? It no see very good? You no see very well?

Thanks for indulging me. I feel much better.

Point is: if you want to go and wander down a street and decide you want to open a knick-knack store selling only pet rock collectibles, just because it sounds fun, then yes, you are correct. The government will not fund your start-up company.

Or if you decide on something much more savvy, you imagine just what, as a for example. Now IF it has a track record of delivering in a manner the government respects, you just might have some micro-grant help. If it has an outstanding business plan and clear evidence of other outside support, you also have a fighting chance to have some grant help. Take a look at the Estate Sale article where the micro grant made the difference between hobby and “bidne’ss”. (click here)

But to expect that grants would fund every hair-brained scheme…..

OVER $250,000.

Over $250,000.
Granted.
This Month.

To help community health centers. According to the director of Laurel health systems Ferlin Patrick, these grants are going tobe used over the next two years. they have to devise ways to use the money, says Patrick, in such a manner that will be sustainable after the money is gone.

Good point: once you have a grant does not mean you will get it every year. Apparently this grant was made to this and other health care centers across the country in areas where job loss ( and loss of disability/insurance coverage) is substantial.

Thinking of this from a business perspective, Laurel Health Center will be hiring two more physicians. It will be creating and maintaining new protocols for un/underinsured people. These new programs will continue to function even after the grant money is spent. And that’s not all. There’s more the funds are doing. Read the article for details.

THE POINT IS THIS:

This business just grew. Though this looks like a social service grant, it actually serves to grow the business, and to create new jobs.

WHO SAYS THERE ARE NO BUSINESS GRANTS?!?!? Whatever your area of interest, look for your grant NOW – New funds are available this year.

Think Again

The overwhelming consensus out there is that grants are for education, for social aid organizations, art and possibly for help with bills. The point is made that there are no government funds for “for-profit” business endeavors, so don’t try. Either these people haven’t looked and have put their thinking cap away – permanently.

Think again.

If you visit any one of the many government funding web pages, you will find funding for-profit companies move in the direction the government decides it wants to fund. Two came up immediately. The first that came up today in searching were medical profiling services, something social services or community health/youth health centers can get as a contract. These centers could add to their current service and receive the government funding for adding this to their services. Not only that, these centers did not have to come up with the plan, they only had to respond to an invitation to upgrade their business, and apply.

Out With The Old and In With The New.. Ideas.

5/5/09  By Ines Q Compton

If there is one thing I would suggest to Americans right now it is to repeat the following phrase: Out With The Old and In With The New.

Out With The Old and In With The New.

One more time:
Out With The Old and In With The New.

Out with the old thinking that there is no money for your business, for your dire straits, for your new idea.

L…O…O…K        A…G….A..I..N.

WHY? We have a new federal Administration with new funding plans, and an economic stimulus package that went into effect February 17, 2009.  What passed for fair just a year ago now is completely different. Pell grants have doubled in number and increased by $500. The amount rural farms can apply for in help with expanding their business has doubled. There are countless examples of  increases and improvements in grants, and these are certainly more available than ever before.

So many people who once upon a time looked into grants and gave up ARE NOW realizing these economic stimulus funds are ready and available.

Well maybe not in the manner Imelda Marcos was accustomed to. BUT for women in business for themselves? You BET!

Oh I love this story.

Before we get going, who are we talking about?

Madison Harding.com, a three year old company based out of New York City. Their first shoe collection came out in 2007. Hilary Rosenman and Barri Budin met in their junior year at Skidmore College. Just a few years later they started designing shoes for their own shoe company. Now Madison Harding Shoes is presenting their fifth collection in three years.

Before it all got started, these two young women had been based out of NY/NJ. At that time Hilary began by working for Charlotte Ronson, a young American/british designer (2000) whose design consisted of vintage tees and lingerie then went into adding wedge heels. This is where Hilary got her “shoe contacts”.  Barri began by working in a sales showroom , a job she deeply disliked and wanted to get out of. She then got work at NYU. The two young women began working toward their dream while keeping their  jobs.

Have fun with this brief quiz on how women are doing in business in the U.S. (click more).

As you read in the case of Lisa L., someone already successful in her market, she looked into government grants for women and found one that would enable her business to open an entire new wing.

Increasing the scope of what she already does, delivering health care to under-served youth, to also creating a database through profiling  their health trends and needs, she would be entering an entirely new and  growing  industry.

This industry is going to grow tremendously in the next 10 years. Though Lisa L. had wanted to get into that field, she did not know how to get there.

Have Dreams of Growing Your Business? Read On.

By Ines Q Compton

Last week, Girlgrants wrote a post about women-owned businesses and how they are performing as a group to add to the US economy. Seeing how many were involved in the health care industry, Lisa L. decided to contact Girlgrants  to ask

what would be available for her business. She owns a business in Indiana involved in the health care industry, providing treatment and education to her community especially for children with special needs. She told how she sees so much more she could do to address these children, but could not remotely figure out how she would go about funding it.

After asking whether she had any clear ideas what she would do if she were given some funding, it became apparent that she already had a good plan. The budget had already been clearly outlined. The locations to provide the service had already been selected. She had even gotten permission from the schools and libraries to use their facilities a few afternoons per month. She simply lacked the funds. Did the government have any funding for something like her business?

Going straight to Grants.Gov online, within 30 minutes, we had found 81 options for her to look into. One in particular suited her interest and as she looked at her profile and saw that she qualifies as an applicant.
