Grants 101: Trivia ?’s (and Answers) For The Beginner

I was reading a few questions and requests I have gotten on grants and decided to make PERFECTLY CLEAR the basic facts about grants.
These are from the most common questions list. Answers are beneath each question. If you want the questions without answers first, click here. That way you get to think about your answers before you read them. If you want to take a trivia test on U.S. Women In Business , click here.
Here we go. Grants 101 Trivia Test
A) Are there income requirements?
Do you have to qualify like you do for a loan , NO.
Do some grants get earmarked just for low – income, YES.
Can/Do people making more than $100,000/year get grants? Yes, they can and they do.
B) How much is available to be given away each?
Hundreds of Billions of dollars.
C) What percent went unclaimed last year?
Well over 50%.
D) If you took the total amount set aside by the government and divided it up amongst US citizens, what amount would there be set aside per citizen (for a given year)?

Have fun with this brief quiz on how women are doing in business in the U.S. (click more).
As you read in the case of Lisa L., someone already successful in her market, she looked into government grants for women and found one that would enable her business to open an entire new wing.
Increasing the scope of what she already does, delivering health care to under-served youth, to also creating a database through profiling their health trends and needs, she would be entering an entirely new and growing industry.
This industry is going to grow tremendously in the next 10 years. Though Lisa L. had wanted to get into that field, she did not know how to get there.

Women Business Owners, Time for You to Consider Government Grants
By Ines Q ComptonAccording to the 2002 US Census Bureau, here are the stats about women in the business sector.
Women-owned businesses are responsible for $939.5 Billion in business revenues annually in the United States They own 6.5 million US businesses that are not farm-related. They employ over 7 million people. These women-owned businesses account for over 28% of all U.S. businesses that are not agricultural farms.
Here’s more: 32 % of women -owned businesses operated in health care, social assistance, and personal services. Women own close to half of all such businesses in the US. Wholesale and retail businesses made up over 38% of women owned-businesses.

Did it? Yesterday’s Blog about funds available as gorvernment grants?
The day before’s blog reached one of our readers as she tweeted me about the new government grant idea she has for her already established business. Exciting. Now: onto education. Of course we have all seen FAFSA apps and we have all heard about Pell Grants. Let’s look a little deeper.
We like to think that we have finally reached a plateau of equality in business and education, but as sad as it may seem, this is simply not true.
What Amount Did The U.S. Set Aside For Government Grants In 2008?

Guess.
While you are coming up with that sum, let’s look at the amount set aside this year. Our new president is busy setting the new annual budget for U.S. government grants for 2009.
It is not new for these grants to be given for personal, business, health , research, as well home improvement and some debt repayment programs. What IS new is the dollar amount. The limits imposed on the grant money has been lifted.
