One of My Favorite Charities: St. Bernard Projectcharitable giving

A few months ago I wrote an article about the St. Bernard Project, citing it as an example of how private funding (and lots of donated labor, let’s not forget) can get your project off the ground and done. (Want to read about them and the house building drives they do…click here).

These guys are in the running for the $25K Gift as well as the $1 Million Gift sponsored by Chase Community Giving. If awarded the $1 Million, according to their figures, this could bring 66 families home in the coming year. Seems like this small organization is outpacing what the federal government is doing for the not-yet-over disaster-stricken New Orleans. You want to vote for these guys to be awarded the $1million? So do I.
Click here to vote for them to be awarded this gift.

SBP is a non-profit organization that seeks to help rebuild the hardest hit parts of New Orleans one house at a time. Scroll down to read their mission statement and their organization information. To keep up with them and check out what they do or go to http://www.stbernardproject.org/ ( or click here to read their facebook link).

Just a few days ago the deadline for the $25K Chase Community Giving voting campaign came and went. They announce omorrow (12/16/2009) which 100 charities received $25K each. (Click here – no earlier than 12/16 – to see who won ).

Now you can also vote at this site (click here) for the next round. Chase Community Giving is now offering $1Million in their next round of giving to charity. The dates you can vote are Jan 15-Jan 22. They announce the winner February 1, 2010 (click here in February to see who won the $1 Million Charity Gift.)

If you want to know how to nominate a charity for the $5 million giving initiative from Chase Community Giving, click here. You can click here if you are a charity and want to be in the running. To nominate your favorite charity, click here.

Don’t have a favorite foundation or charity? Look into the SBP. You could also look here for some ideas, or here, or here, just to get thoughts rolling on what exactly you want to fund.

OVER $250,000.

Over $250,000.
Granted.
This Month.

To help community health centers. According to the director of Laurel health systems Ferlin Patrick, these grants are going tobe used over the next two years. they have to devise ways to use the money, says Patrick, in such a manner that will be sustainable after the money is gone.

Good point: once you have a grant does not mean you will get it every year. Apparently this grant was made to this and other health care centers across the country in areas where job loss ( and loss of disability/insurance coverage) is substantial.

Thinking of this from a business perspective, Laurel Health Center will be hiring two more physicians. It will be creating and maintaining new protocols for un/underinsured people. These new programs will continue to function even after the grant money is spent. And that’s not all. There’s more the funds are doing. Read the article for details.

THE POINT IS THIS:

This business just grew. Though this looks like a social service grant, it actually serves to grow the business, and to create new jobs.

WHO SAYS THERE ARE NO BUSINESS GRANTS?!?!? Whatever your area of interest, look for your grant NOW – New funds are available this year.

CVS grants to Special Olympics
Who is CVS C.C.T.? It is a private foundation , namely CVS Charitable trust and CVS Caremark All Kids Program.

What is their objective?
To help children with disabilities by making ways for them to play and get some physical exercise, making available rehab and medical services, and getting schools and communities on board with no longer excluding these children from what was formerly inaccessible activity.

“” In today’s climate it’s more important than ever to support organizations that can have a positive impact on children with disabilities and their families,” said Eileen Howard Dunn, Senior Vice President, CVS Caremark Charitable Trust. “The CVS Caremark Charitable Trust selected these grant recipients because they align with our mission to promote inclusion, increase access to medical therapies and improve academic performance of children with disabilities.””

Whom have they gifted?

Out With The Old and In With The New.. Ideas.

5/5/09  By Ines Q Compton

If there is one thing I would suggest to Americans right now it is to repeat the following phrase: Out With The Old and In With The New.

Out With The Old and In With The New.

One more time:
Out With The Old and In With The New.

Out with the old thinking that there is no money for your business, for your dire straits, for your new idea.

L…O…O…K        A…G….A..I..N.

WHY? We have a new federal Administration with new funding plans, and an economic stimulus package that went into effect February 17, 2009.  What passed for fair just a year ago now is completely different. Pell grants have doubled in number and increased by $500. The amount rural farms can apply for in help with expanding their business has doubled. There are countless examples of  increases and improvements in grants, and these are certainly more available than ever before.

So many people who once upon a time looked into grants and gave up ARE NOW realizing these economic stimulus funds are ready and available.

… And  the teens are doing it themselves.

In a coastal town in Ca, a local college student applied for a government “micro-grant” to involve teens in cleaning up their community and educating the community on where the problem starts and how to avoid fix it.

The end result is an empowerment of the teens, teaching them not to wait for someone else to do what they see as needed. The program teaches resposibility and follow-through. It shows them how to move into action. It helps teens connect in a social environement which would otherwise be frought with gaming services. Now they regularly  interact with real live people on a regular basis. It helps them feel the good feeling one gets from  serving.

This teen program that got its funding exclusively from a government grant cleans up the streets and beaches in the county. The kids do not get paid. The funds go to taking before and after pics and raising awareness in the community parents/shoppers, and finally on a website the teens designed and maintain, all with the grant funds.  Good for the environment , good for the teens, good for the community. Nice!

Go Team! Go Teens! To see what exactly the teens are doing click “Read More.”
