Overwhelmed? Not Getting Anything Done?
Posted by: | CommentsGetting Over Those Humps.. Yes You Can Make A Difference.. From Survival to Significance
.
Recently, I got an email from a friend who writes government contract bids in D.C., Olessia Smotrova-Taylor, President/CEO of OST Global Solutions, Inc., one of the MOST SUCCESSFUL contract bidders in DC. She wrote me saying her head was absolutely spinning after a very demanding seminar she attended, as she included an apology for not getting back to me (a few hours earlier.. ) To my way of thinking, she WAS on time, and not at all late in her response to my question. And as to head spinning thing, I thought, “Heck! It’s 2009.. Who doesn’t have their head spinning?”
I realized I held the belief: OVERWHELM…. is the Standard Operating Procedure and defining way of people in these modern United States.
Well, I am glad to tell you….I am wrong.
That same day, I spoke with….

Well these ladies started with 30 members with one thing in mind: to meet others in the community and do something fun. Now their 130 + members from a 501 (c) (3) Foundation, which means they can give to people as well as to other 501 (c) (3)’s . They enjoy 2 luncheons a month, an annual Fashion Show Fundraiser and monthly Canasta, Bunco, An Upscale Lunch, Bowling, Evening Book Club, and Daytime Book Club to attend at your leisure. Their dues are low but add up when it comes to giving: they can boldly say that 99% of what they raise go directly to donations.
What’s the name of this foundation? We are talking about the Greater Keller Women’s Club , located just about 40 miles north west of Dallas, Texas. They are not an exclusively Keller based club, anyone who wants to join can, and their dues are $36/year, at most. The 132 members in 2007 volunteered a total of over 10,000 hours that year and raised over …
See What Women Can Do with the Aid of Major Grants?

WOW!
Here we have a story about women not only giving to women, but also doing the labor of rebuilding their homes, homes ruined by the Katrina flood in New Orleans, Louisiana.
In the second week of May, 150 women gathered to participate in Women’s Rebuild event in New Orleans. I have to mention their slogan: ” A Women’s Place Is Rebuilding The Home”. ( I like it, I like it) This event was put together by Women’s Voices for Change. Liz McCartney, the project’s co-director, says this event is just part of what ST. Bernard Project is doing to rebuild St. Bernard Parish Louisiana.
She saw how many women wanted to help and couldn’t find a way to do it. You know, I understand. I was in shock when I saw the devastation back when it happened. Within 4 months, my daughter and I went to New Orleans for 2 months . (She had to get out of school to do it). We went and helped one family in particular to re-establish their home as their actual place of residence, as they had been staying with friends just outside of town for months when we arrived. Along with others, we removed moldy carpet (whoa! was that toxic!), sped up the process of dry things out, hauled off what was worthless and caulked, and repainted. We also bought a few basic needs appliance that had been washed away. There had no real agreement, nor was there an end in sight to what still had to be done. And that was only one family to get back in their house.
But it didn’t feel like we made a dent in the needs of the family much less in the need of the parish. We had. But in the face of the destruction and nothing done to change it, we left exhausted and not feeling like we had really achieved much. We told ourselves how good it was we had helped this one family move back into their house. True. but it would have been really nice to be a part of something to where you have completely rebuilt the house in 2 months.
That’s how this St. Bernard Project really stands out: they create the focus and gather the labor and funds for materials so as to get really effective really fast. She says people really really like participating… So much so, that they are doing another Women’s Rebuild Week, October 12 to 17.. here’s where you can go to learn more about it (right now ti appears their website is acting funny.. if they do not get to it, all you have to do is scroll sideways and the text shows up just fine.)
What Liz McCartney (CNN named her Hero of the Year 2008) has pulled together….

ARE YOU BEGINNING TO SEE HOW MUCH MONEY IS FLOWING, YES! IN THIS ECONOMY, TO FUND ALL SORTS OF THINGS?
Alright! Another “Women giving their own money to give to the community” story. Their goal: to “help address emerging issues and meet critical needs in the areas of Arts and Culture, Education, Environment, Health and Human services.”
SO exciting.
Women’s Impact Fund, founded in 2003 and based in Charlotte, NC, is made up of over 400 women who agree to pool their resources to support the local community. Each year members contribute $1,200 each to the fund, for an agreed term of five years. So far they have given a total of just under $1.8 Million to education, the environment, health, arts, culture, all in their own community.
What amount are they disbursing to their 2009 grantees? just under …..
YES YOU CAN ACCOMPLISH WHAT YOU WANT.

“To think it all started with that award I got for just doing what I love: caring for cats and dogs!”
I was just thinking of my friend D.C,.who not long ago uttered these words to me. When she was in her teens she received a $1000 award from the Soroptimists for her help in the local Animal Care Shelters in our town. Along with that cash award, she was given $1000 to give to the charitable organization of her choice. That kid went crazy helping feed/water/bathe/walk and love the cats and dogs in all the animal shelters around town.
Now she is 24 and is acquiring her five-year …..

In the last three years The Women’s Giving Circle, part of the the Gainesville Community Foundation in Florida has given away $275,000 to women and girls “to teach them life skills / job skills”.
When they began in Gainesville, the goal of the Women’s Giving Circle was to find 50 women pledge $1,000 for two years. They found 80 people who wanted to join and now the total number is 120 women. $17,000 has gone to Girls Place, an after school program center for girls and summer camp program. The WGC has given $10,000 for Habitat for Humanity to help with the 5th house Women Build plans on building. Currently they have 20 other agencies applying for funds from the Women’s Giving Circle.
The women are looking to fund the area that will deliver the most impact. This is really the toughest decision in giving funds to anyone.

Who is CVS C.C.T.? It is a private foundation , namely CVS Charitable trust and CVS Caremark All Kids Program.
What is their objective?
To help children with disabilities by making ways for them to play and get some physical exercise, making available rehab and medical services, and getting schools and communities on board with no longer excluding these children from what was formerly inaccessible activity.
“” In today’s climate it’s more important than ever to support organizations that can have a positive impact on children with disabilities and their families,” said Eileen Howard Dunn, Senior Vice President, CVS Caremark Charitable Trust. “The CVS Caremark Charitable Trust selected these grant recipients because they align with our mission to promote inclusion, increase access to medical therapies and improve academic performance of children with disabilities.””
Whom have they gifted?
So You Think Government Grants Don’t Fund Business?

Think Again
The overwhelming consensus out there is that grants are for education, for social aid organizations, art and possibly for help with bills. The point is made that there are no government funds for “for-profit” business endeavors, so don’t try. Either these people haven’t looked and have put their thinking cap away – permanently.
Think again.
If you visit any one of the many government funding web pages, you will find funding for-profit companies move in the direction the government decides it wants to fund. Two came up immediately. The first that came up today in searching were medical profiling services, something social services or community health/youth health centers can get as a contract. These centers could add to their current service and receive the government funding for adding this to their services. Not only that, these centers did not have to come up with the plan, they only had to respond to an invitation to upgrade their business, and apply.
What Grants Are Available to Female Business Owners?

Despite numerous equality laws and regulations against workplace discrimination, many women often feel as if they are still not receiving the same respect and opportunities as other workers.
Some women that own their own small business often complain about the lack of respect that male-run businesses seem to give them. As a woman business owner you have enough things to worry about without these feelings of inequality.
Despite these conditions, there is help out there and it comes in the form of financial assistance!
