Unemployment Numbers Surprising; Gov Stim Bill To The Rescue

The numbers of welfare applicants is in and it tells a sobering story of what is going on in these United States.

There are 15 states that are recording a 10% increase in welfare cases, such as Illinois, New York, Arizona and others. The 8 states left, all three states on the west coast, Colorado, Ohio, Maryland, South Carolina, Florida all claim to have seen an increase of welfare cases in their state of more than 30% from last year.

Of the 50 States, only six states have a 10% or more decrease in welfare cases for a year ago: New Jersey, Georgia, Indiana, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Texas. While 18 states have seen little or no change in the number of welfare cases, it seems unemployment payments are catching the unemployed and keeping them out of teh welfare lines for now.

Also, it is easier to qualify for…

… food stamps than welfare. The average income qualifying for welfare has to be BELOW $636/month for a household of three (stat from one state.. other states are different – but not by much). The same household earning over $2000 a month can qualify for food stamps without much trouble. (To apply for food stamps, click here.)

Recipients on Welfare

The past 13 years have seen a decrease of the number of people on welfare.

Year Number of Monthly Welfare Recipients
2007: 3,880,321
2006: 4,074,689
2005: 4,386,206
2004: 4,695,211
2003: 4,843,562
2002: 5,013,728
2001: 5,276,319
2000: 5,527,071
1999: 6,175,831
1998: 7,578,222
1997: 9,326,683
1996: 11,533,710

One might assume there to be a huge surplus due to several years with very low welfare recipient numbers. Not so.

A friend who has a full time researcher assistant on task looking into this asserts daunting new numbers of unemployed in Tennessee and a couple of other states. In Michigan, more than 1.4 million people are receiving food stamps, this number is up by 13% .

It turns out in these states, they are reducing how much they are doling out per welfare recipient due to the required stretch of the dollar to include more families. One woman who was recently unemployed said she is getting only under $300 a month, down from what the had offered in the beginning.

The new numbers: in some areas, they are reporting 72% unemployment, 80% unemployment in another county. At best, these people are getting 6 months unemployment (if they remain unemployed for that duration) and 6 months severance pay.

These people are going to have to be really resourceful with these funds to put them to best use. If no one gets new employ, that means 72% unemployment in certain areas in 12 months. Not an option!

What’s in place to meet this right now?

The lack of increase of applications for welfare during the worst recession in a generation is making people scratch their head.

According to Mark H. Greenberg of Georgetown University’s Center on Poverty, Inequality and Public Policy, the extension of unemployment benefits recently passed by Congress is keeping the unemployed funded for longer. According to Don Winstead, DS of Florida’s Department of Children and Families , the extended unemployment benefits are doing what they were designed to do (be the first safety net) and that without this in place, the number of welfare applicants would have been far. In Florida, they are up by 14% when compared to the rates in June one year ago.

The lengthened term Congress just passed, is as long as 59 weeks in some states. This is how, he believes, the unemployed are not showing up in the welfare lines just yet.

The TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families) is the program that replaced the federal welfare program in 1996. The federal funds are handed to each state to hand to its citizens. Look for the TANF post to apply for temporary assistance on this blog. Also at your state’s site, you will finder a number of other programs you can also apply for. Many do not know that they can apply for several programs at once. Each state is different and names their programs differently.

How Has the Government Responded? Stimulus Grants

The federal government’s stimulus $5 billion plan is aimed to help states where the numbers applying and receiving welfare is increasing. It also funds the increases on employment subsidies.

Up until now, the only states to have gotten their share of the $5 billion are Ohio and California. According to Jeffrey Kelley, spokesman for the Department of Health and Human Services’ Administration for Children and Families, thirty eight other states said they plan to apply.

I think it’s really important to get some sort of support from Government now because already there are many issues which have frustrated the public already, they should be given some sort of help unless they find a job. I am sure as the economy will stabilize sooner, they’ll return back to work soon.

Lets hope the job numbers that come out at the end of this week are good.

I don’t understand what exactly the gov stimulus has done for the welfare of all those unemployed. Hopefully it would have done something meaningful, but I don’t understand how its gonna work. Also I read a recent economic studies which states Washington state’s unemployment rate rises to 9.3 percent in the months of Aug-September. And one more strange thing is some country’s economy remains cool like in UK. I also don’t understand anything from these figures especially after the downturn. All I pray is for the poor people who lost their jobs and had their homes foreclosed soon be deprived of their poor state and become normal again.

i think economy rate is coming up slowly now a days, recession have really slow down the corporate network, but things are going positive now a days, companies have started to recruit employees in U.S. and U.K.

5

government is already giving packages for corporate sectors, but companies are abusing this help, in the name of recession they are making profit by cutting amount of employees and carrying out more work from existing employees

6

Recently i read one article where it was confirmed that about 20K more people have loose their job in this Oct. Its really disappointing when Obama is really trying to make way out of it and its still not yet working.

7

Can’t blame the president. I think he’s doing a great job to solve this. I notice some people are too choosy when it comes to job searching. My point is, take what is currently offered closest to what you skills are. At least you have a salary for the time being instead of waiting for months and months without earning a cent.

8

Ya we can’t blame president, but there is something wrong with companies, they are just making hoax of recession and earning more from it by misusing the packages that president have offered to bring recession up.

9

The economic downturn has rendered people from all over the world jobless. People are available and capable to work but there are no jobs available. In America alone, more than 500,000 jobs were lost this summer. Unemployment rate is at an all-time high at 9.5% and predicted to stay static over the next year. This has been the longest recession since the Great Depression in the 1930s

nice post … after 1996 the TANF is helpful for its citizens

11

It’s certainly a problem. I still believe there’s jobs out there though, as long as people keep looking they’ll find one eventually. It may mean having to take a jobs they don’t want for now, but at times like this somethings better than nothing.

12

Yeah well we have to eventually let the wounds heal during it’s natural course, we did this plain and simple. Over spending, living beyond our means, etc.. and now it come sback to haunt us.

Thanks,

Mostly the stim plan has increased teh unemployed benefits to go from 3 months to as long as 18 months (as in it really does keep people off the streets in hard to find jobs times like these). They also fund local food banks, drug centers, homeless shelters as the need for these are on teh increase. They are funding new research which causes the creation of new jobs – most of these are at least 2 year contracts, some as long as five year contracts. They fund a lot of art and community music.they are onw gettng busy buying up foreclode houses, getting them repaired adn returning them to market repaired adn at a good price , offering them to first time buyers with some kind of new tax break for first time buyers (I forget what it is.. but it is offered through th enew year when previously it had been scheduled to end (the tax break for first time buyers) by 12/31/09). This are some major areas where grants go.
The other area – that has always been there – is in big government jobs that it wants done. This is a very long story involving very very very nig money.
One contract we got involved in here was to help link a small time cleaning service located in one city in the US to go and apply for (and she got it) a contract to do the cleanup in military bases overseas. BIG contract. Biggest problem here is the workers you have to find have to all have government clearance…. a daunting task.
That’s my quickest answer.

Looking at some of the jobs created by the economic stimulus in Cleveland, I can only say it is depressing. Some companies are receiving as much as $400,000 per job they create. The lowest cost to taxpayers, on a per job basis, was $28,000. Our tax dollars are getting wasted when it is the trade policies that need to be fixed – not more money giveaways.

15

Even though “everybody” is complaining that the unemployment rate is skyrocketing there are still lots of jobs openings! People are getting “to good for some jobs”. In this country if you really want to work you will find a job. No matter what. Maybe it is not your dream job but it is a job and you do not need to apply for welfare. It is always better to earn money than to beg for. Government programs can do only so much but everybody needs to do something about it.

Proper planning and hard work and saving should help anyone who is dealing with financial problems. Making a simple budget to live on and writing down all your expenses and needs can help solve financial problems before they start.

Kudos for giving such a useful site. Your website is not just useful but also very creative too. There are a limited number of people who can create technical articles that creatively. All of us keep looking for articles on something like this. We ourselves went over several blogs to find information regarding this.I will check back often !!

You know I just looked into this cool software you can buy made by UFirst Financial, helps you pay off your loans off early as efficiently as possible..
I don’t have a link for it but google for it.
They have figured out how to beat the interest machine. Outstanding.
