Even though “everybody” is complaining that the unemployment rate is skyrocketing there are still lots of jobs openings! People are getting “to good for some jobs”. In this country if you really want to work you will find a job. No matter what. Maybe it is not your dream job but it is a job and you do not need to apply for welfare. It is always better to earn money than to beg for. Government programs can do only so much but everybody needs to do something about it.

Looking at some of the jobs created by the economic stimulus in Cleveland, I can only say it is depressing. Some companies are receiving as much as $400,000 per job they create. The lowest cost to taxpayers, on a per job basis, was $28,000. Our tax dollars are getting wasted when it is the trade policies that need to be fixed – not more money giveaways.

Mostly the stim plan has increased teh unemployed benefits to go from 3 months to as long as 18 months (as in it really does keep people off the streets in hard to find jobs times like these). They also fund local food banks, drug centers, homeless shelters as the need for these are on teh increase. They are funding new research which causes the creation of new jobs – most of these are at least 2 year contracts, some as long as five year contracts. They fund a lot of art and community music.they are onw gettng busy buying up foreclode houses, getting them repaired adn returning them to market repaired adn at a good price , offering them to first time buyers with some kind of new tax break for first time buyers (I forget what it is.. but it is offered through th enew year when previously it had been scheduled to end (the tax break for first time buyers) by 12/31/09). This are some major areas where grants go.
The other area – that has always been there – is in big government jobs that it wants done. This is a very long story involving very very very nig money.
One contract we got involved in here was to help link a small time cleaning service located in one city in the US to go and apply for (and she got it) a contract to do the cleanup in military bases overseas. BIG contract. Biggest problem here is the workers you have to find have to all have government clearance…. a daunting task.
That’s my quickest answer.

It’s certainly a problem. I still believe there’s jobs out there though, as long as people keep looking they’ll find one eventually. It may mean having to take a jobs they don’t want for now, but at times like this somethings better than nothing.
